Senora Gladys' Chick-fil-A Story

Some of the most powerful stories I know have begun from a place of pain and loss. With over 20 years of experience in the foodservice industry, I’ve known and even played a small role in many of these stories myself. However, occasionally, you hear a story that changes the way you look at the world. A story that inspires hope and even challenges you to make the world a better place. I’m honored to have the privilege of sharing one of these stories with you.

Anyone who knows her could tell you that Mrs. Gladys is the human embodiment of joy and perseverance. She is the mother of three, grandmother of six “princesas hermosas” (beautiful princesses) and the proverbial matriarch of her clan. She built a successful business operating a family-owned restaurant in her native Colombia. Unfortunately, with her success came the attentions of opportunistic guerillas who threatened her family with violence and extortion. Most of her family were able to escape to Ecuador, but some were unable to make the journey. After a year spent as displaced persons in Ecuador, the family received immigration papers to enter the US under refugee status.

With the aid of the life-changing work of our friends at Lutheran Services of the Carolinas, I was introduced to this beautiful family at the beginning of the year. It was our pleasure to add Mrs. Gladys, her daughter Luz, and her granddaughter Camila to our team at Bush River Road. Gladys and Luz work together in prep and produce in the kitchen. Their commitment to excellence and consistency helps us uphold the reputation for quality that Chick-fil-A has become famous for. Camila is a cross-functional team member whose dedication and attention to detail ensure that our restaurant continues to shine almost as bright as her smile.

As our friendship began to grow, it became very clear to me that Mrs. Gladys’ faith is central to everything she does. I’ve lost count of the times she has prayed for me and for my family and been an encouragement to me on days when I needed it most. She has always been gracious with my limited Spanish abilities and has greeted me each day with a smile. Mrs. Gladys teaches me daily about the power of hope and a faith that can move mountains. Sometimes she even uses words.

When Gladys is not making delicious fruit cups and parfaits, she enjoys cooking and spending time with her family. She is also very involved with her church.

A veces incluso usa palabras.

Tre's Chick-fil-A Story

In my time with Chick-fil-A, I've had the privilege of working with a lot of inspiring young people.  It's amazing but not uncommon to see our team members develop into business leaders and agents of change in our community.  Occasionally, I get to work alongside someone who not only inspires and challenges me personally, but who also has a profound impact on everyone around them as well.  Treshaun Jacobs is just such a person. Tre joined the team at Chick-fil-a Bush River Road in August of 2021 during a pivotal time for the future of our business.  We were transitioning out of a season of corporate stewardship as we prepared to welcome a new operator.  Tre quickly established a reputation for dependability and selfless service.  In the weeks and months after this transition, he proved time and again how valuable he had become to our organization.  Years later, his joy in serving others refuses to be limited by the four walls of the restaurant....

LaDasia's Chick-fil-A Story

“It was the best decision I’ve ever made.  It’s so easy to grow in this community.  This is where I needed to be.” LaDasia joined the team at Chick-fil-A Bush River Road in the summer of 2021.  Shortly after the passing of our long-time operator and in the midst of the COVID19 pandemic, it was certainly a difficult season for our unit.  Encouraged to apply by her family, her aim was to simply pull down a steady paycheck.  As one of our recently promoted supervisors, she is now building a legacy of care that goes miles beyond making ends meet. In our conversation, LaDasia shared with me that her grandpa has always been a source of inspiration for her.  Unflagging support and a persistent challenge are the trademarks of his investment in her journey.  We continued to talk about investing in others and the trickle down effect of this style of leadership.  This is something she is deeply passionate about.  I love watching her seize teachab...
